A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Seekonk early Sunday morning.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Seekonk Police were notified at around 6:40 a.m. today from an alarm company regarding a break-in at a business on Route 6. The D.A.’s Office did not identify the business.

Officers arrived on scene six minutes later, confirming the break-in and spotting the male suspect leaving the area on foot. He was then spotted in the parking lot of another Route 6 business, and fled from that lot in a black Honda, heading east on Route 6. According to the D.A.’s Office, the suspect lost control of the vehicle at the intersection of School Street and Route 6, struck a curb, and rolled the vehicle onto its passenger side.

Two Seekonk Police officers arrived at the crash scene, and that’s when the D.A.’s Office said the suspect opened fire “with a 7.62 millimeter AK-47 model rifle.” The officers returned fire and called in the regional SWAT team.

“After the SWAT team determined the suspect no longer posed a threat, emergency responders made access to the suspect's vehicle by cutting open the roof of the car. The suspect was determined to be deceased at the scene,” the D.A.’s Office reported.

The D.A.’s Office said the suspect’s identity has not been finalized and the cause of death is pending an autopsy. The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.

Seekonk Police said no officers were injured in the incident.
