Seekonk Police Arrest Assault Suspect But Still Searching for His Truck
SEEKONK (WBSM) — A man who allegedly assaulted a woman with a firearm has been taken into custody by Seekonk Police, while the department is asking for the public’s help in locating the suspect’s vehicle.
Patrol Division Commander and Detective Division Executive Officer Captain Matthew Jardine said that patrol units responded to the Motel 6 on Fall River Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. today for a report of a hangup call to 911.
Officers at the scene located a woman in one of the hallways who claimed she had been assaulted with a firearm by a male suspect. Police learned the suspect – later identified as Corey Soares, 37, of Punta Gorda, Florida – had fled the motel upon seeing police arrive.
Detectives secured a search warrant for the motel room and located a loaded Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun. An arrest warrant was then issued for Soares through Taunton District Court, Jardine said.
At about 2 p.m., an officer on routine patrol saw a person he believed to be Soares enter the Panera Bread on Highland Avenue. He engaged the suspect inside the restaurant and confirmed it was Soares, who he then took into custody without incident.
Soares is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, domestic strangulation of suffocation, possessing a large-capacity firearm, assault with intent to murder while fire-armed, firearm violation with three prior violent or drug crimes, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
Jardine said Soares originally fled the motel in his 2001 Ford F150 pickup truck, which is green with Florida license plate 33EKYT. Police are asking anyone with information on the location of the truck to contact them at (508) 336-8123.
