Rep. Tony Cabral says he's hoping to at least start the ball rolling Monday on salvaging funding for Southcoast Rail, when the Mass. House debates the leadership's proposed transportation plan.

Gov. Patrick had proposed a 1% increase in the state income tax as part of a plan to raise $1.9 billion for education initiatives and transportation projects, including money to extend commuter rail service to New Bedford and Fall River.

But House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray countered with a $500 million plan, that includes no funding for Southcoast Rail.

Rep. Cabral says he'll attempt to amend leadership's bill.....

Cabral says he's working to build coalitions with other lawmakers who also want commuter rail service for their areas and are unhappy with the leadership plan.  He's also exploring whether its possible to use casino revenues for transportation projects, like Southcoast Rail.
