Police say they've arrested a man who stole more than $70,000 in jewelry from a woman riding a ferry from Nantucket to the mainland.

Barnstable police say 57-year-old William Powers faces charges including larceny and forgery in connection with Monday's theft on board the Grey Lady.

The Cape Cod Times reports a woman reported her suitcase missing after arriving on shore. Police said security footage showed a man loading the bag on to a truck but he and the vehicle could not be identified.

Police say they got a break when Powers cashed a check from a checkbook that had been in the woman's suitcase.

Investigators say Powers was arrested Friday and the missing items recovered. Powers is being held on $1,000 bail and scheduled for arraignment Monday.
