Why a Rare Stabbing on Nantucket Is Making National Headlines
A stabbing the other day on Nantucket has the island buzzing, even catching the attention of Fox News and other national news outlets, but not because it was a particularly gruesome affair. It was not. The victim survived the assault, and though he was airlifted to an off-island hospital for treatment, he appears to be recovering.
The reason the stabbing has received so much attention is that it happened in a place that very rarely experiences weapon-based violence.
The stabbing occurred near South Beach on June 23, 2026, at 10:23 a.m., according to a statement from the Nantucket Police Department.
Altercation Between Delivery Drivers Near South Beach
Witnesses told the Nantucket Current the stabbing allegedly "occurred following a verbal and physical altercation between the driver of a Myles Reis garbage truck" and the driver of a "Sayles Seafood delivery truck that had parked in the area."

Kemar K. Downer, a 39-year-old from Portland, Jamaica, who was apparently living on Nantucket and operating the Sayles Seafood truck, has been charged. Downer posted bail and is free pending his trial.
The stabbing victim was not identified by police.
Surveillance Video Details the Violent Incident
The Jamaica Observer reported, "Surveillance footage obtained by the Current shows a man in a safety vest approach Downer in a white shirt and hit him repeatedly, after which Downer seems to pull an item and slash at the man multiple times before the man flees."
How Rare is Violent Crime on Nantucket?
Below Deck Nantucket said, "Nantucket isn't a high crime place." "In a recent year, the island saw about 165 reported crimes: 30 violent, 135 property," the site reported.
