New Bedford’s Newest Restaurant ‘Smashes’ Grand Opening

NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — After just one day in business, it’s safe to say downtown New Bedford’s newest restaurant is a “smash” success.

Smashed opened up at 640 Pleasant Street on Wednesday, June 5, and although owner Brandon Sadeck had planned to remain open until 3 a.m., he ended up closing around midnight due to the overwhelming volume of customers.

There were no more smash burgers, jumbo chicken tenders, fries or anything else to be had.

“We completely sold out of food. We are sorry for any inconveniences. We will be back at it tomorrow!” Sadeck posted to the Smashed NB Facebook page at 12 a.m.

When we stopped in to check out Smashed at around 1 p.m., Sadeck said he was surprised by the number of people that had come in already – and they’d only been open for about two hours.

It’s a lofty goal to be open from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. each day, and with delivery service on top of that, but Sadeck sets the tone by being behind the counter and in the kitchen himself, while his wife is also out on the floor delivering burgers and chicken to hungry patrons.

Sadeck is a New Bedford native who eventually moved to Los Angeles before returning to the Whaling City. He took his experience in the restaurant business and wanted to put that knowledge to use in a venture that would have an impact.

“There haven't been any late night options down here for a while,” he told us, noting that it probably goes back to when Sarducci’s was open in the same spot.

He said he’s been welcomed by the neighbors – even the ones that also sell smash burgers.

Speaking of which, you can get a double smash burger featuring two patties, cheese, pickles, caramelized onions and smashed sauce for $12.99. A triple is $15.99.

If you’d like to try a smash burger and the jumbo tenders, you can get the Smashed Combo for $12.99 featuring two patties (no bun), two jumbo tenders and fries for $16.99.

All the meals come with fries and a soda, too.

Other menu items include chicken and a waffle, mozzarella sticks, macaroni and cheese, chicken wings, salads, milkshakes, and eventually pizzas as well.

Jumbo tenders come in flavors such as plain, hot, lemon pepper and honey BBQ, and available sauces include smashed sauce, ranch, honey BBQ, bleu cheese, sweet and sour, honey mustard, ketchup, hot sauce, mayo, nacho cheese, and the absolute must-try Maria’s house sauce.

We tried the Hot Mac Burrito, stuffed with hot chicken, macaroni and cheese, fries, and smashed sauce. It came with a side of fries and we also got some of Maria's house sauce to try as well. Highly recommended; the burrito was great (and only a little bit messy) while the Cajun-seasoned fries were perfect.

Smashed has about a dozen four-person tables for those who want to dine in, and is also available for delivery for those who don’t.

If you do head down there, just be aware that Smashed doesn't have any exterior signage yet, but they're working on it. It's located across from the bus terminal and City Hall on the Pleasant Street side.
