MARION (WBSM) — A duck hunter was pulled out of the water in Marion this morning after he fell out of his boat.

Marion Police, Marion Fire and EMS and the Marion Harbormaster all worked together to rescue the 19-year-old man, who fell into the water from a boat about 200 yards offshore near Silvershell Beach.

The departments responded after a 911 call came in at about 7:59 a.m.

Harbormaster Adam Murphy and Police Sgt. Larry Savery located the hunter, who had pulled himself back into his boat but was suffering from severe hypothermia, according to authorities.

At the time he was pulled from the water, the air temperature was 21 degrees and the water temperature was 34 degrees.

Murphy took off his coat and other clothes and put them on the hunter to help warm him back up. He was taken ashore and firefighters provided him with warming blankets and IV warming liquids.

The hunter was then transported to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, but authorities said his condition is unknown at this time.

Authorities said the initial investigation suggests the man was duck hunting with a 17-year-old friend. The friend was hunting from the shore when he noticed the other hunt was no longer in the boat. He then called 911, which Fire Chief Brian Jackvony and Police Chief Richard Nighelli credited with saving the 19-year-old’s life.

“Clearly, it was a good heads up that the younger individual was able to make a quick phone call to 911 to get resources out there,” Jackvony said. “I’m happy he made that call immediately. It doesn't take long for hypothermia to kick in.”

“I would like to thank our Harbormaster and Sgt. Savery for going out there in less-than-ideal conditions and bringing this young hunter back to shore,” Nighelli said. “Their timely rescue allowed us to provide life-saving measures.”
