Police say they've arrested a Taunton man after he assaulted a store clerk and bit him in the face. The incident happened around 11:25 p.m. on Monday night in Taunton.

Police responded to the store and found 19-year-old Joel Davila of Taunton sitting on the floor. After an investigation, Davila was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. He was later arrested and charged with assault with intent to maim and mayhem.

After reviewing surveillance footage, police determined that Davila was attempting to steal a bottled drink from the beverage cooler when the 55-year old clerk intervened.

During a struggle, Davila allegedly bit the inside of the clerk's elbow and then bit his face.

Two witnesses in the store then got involved. One called 911, while the other prevented the suspect from leaving the store.

The clerk suffered a serious gash below his left eye. He was transported to a Boston hospital with what police say were not-life-threatening injuries.

Police Chief Edward Walsh said, "I would like to commend the good Samaritans who were in the store, and helped the victim while preventing from escaping and possibly harming others."

Davila was expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Taunton District Court.
