Why are so many young people abusing prescription drugs?

That is the question local group DrugFreeNB is asking. The group held an informational presentation at the Wamsutta Club Thursday night to address the growing issue of prescription pill abuse in the area and across the nation.

Coordinator Carl Alves, also a part of Positive Action Against Chemical Addiction (PAACA), says prescription drug abuse has become a serious issue.

Across the country, 18-20 year olds visit emergency rooms for prescription drug overdoses almost twice as much as people ages 12-17.

DrugFreeNB is hoping education and support to local addicts and their families can help reduce this sudden hike in ER visits and ultimately drug-related deaths all together.

The group holds informational meetings to provide support services around the city, and they also hold drug take-back events where residents can properly dispose of unused prescription drugs.
