LAKEVILLE (WBSM) — A Lakeville family was displaced from their home just days before Christmas following a fire late Sunday night.

According to the Lakeville Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to a home on Anaconda Drive just after 11 p.m. on December 22 for a report of smoke in the home.

Firefighters arrived and were able to quickly knock down the fire. They said one person was home at the time and was able to get out of the home without injury.

Two dogs were rescued by firefighters after the homeowner had removed two other dogs. The family’s cats, birds and all but one of their pet reptiles survived the fire.

“Firefighters conducted (an) extensive overhaul and extinguished all pockets of fire,” according to the department. “Firefighters also initiated salvage operations, attempting to isolate Christmas presents from being damaged by the fire and water.”

Mutual aid was provided by the MIddleboro, Raynham and Freetown fire departments. Firefighters remained on the scene until 2:10 a.m.

At least six family members were displaced from the home, as the fire left the space temporarily uninhabitable. They were assisted by the Red Cross.

The department said the fire is not considered suspicious and the cause is still under investigation.

Lakeville Fire Chief Michael O’Brien extended his support to the family,

“Being displaced from your home because of a fire is a nightmare, but it is especially difficult two days before Christmas,” he said. “I hope the family takes comfort in the fact that nobody was hurt and there will be better days ahead.”
