Houdini Inc. is recalling Blue Cheese Savory Twists because of a possible salmonella contamination, according to the State of Rhode Island Department of Health.

According to WPRI 12, a limited quantity of the products was distributed nationwide through Wine Country Gift Baskets and Houdini Inc’s wholesale division from Sept. 1, 2016, and Dec. 12, 2016, health officials said. No problems were found with any other food products in the baskets.

The recall includes 7 oz. packages with one of two lot codes printed on the foil pouch:

  • 1831602XX (XX = last 2 digits refer to specific packaging machine)
  • 2431602XX (XX = last 2 digits refer to specific packaging machine)

"The company issued the recall after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found traces of salmonella at a manufacturing facility that supplied the powdered buttermilk used to make the blue cheese twists."

Health officials stated that the salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, elderly people, and those with weak immune systems. A healthy person infected with salmonella can experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

So far, no illnesses have been reported to date, according to the health department.

Consumers are urged to throw away the products immediately.
