Fairhaven Town Hall Pride Flags Removed

As Pride Month wraps up, a story is developing in Fairhaven. A small group of five people lined Fairhaven Town Hall's front lawn with 100 Pride flags last night before sunset. One of those people, Gloria Perperas, said it was a spur-of-the-moment idea to show support for Pride Month.

Someone, however, did not think the flags were a good idea, because sometime between 8 p.m. last night at 6:30 a.m. this morning, all of the flags were removed from display. It is unknown who removed them.

"We expected them to be removed, we really did," said Perperas, owner of Gloria and Company. "It appears that it's not what two selectmen would like to see in our town of Fairhaven."

Earlier this month, Fairhaven School Committee member Kyle Bueno tried, but failed, to get approval to fly the Pride flag in front of the town hall.

"The town's library is flying the Pride flag, the church across the street is flying the Pride flag. I would like to feel as though I'm living in a progressive community that would accept all people," said Perperas.

The group plans on returning Saturday evening at 7 p.m. to once again line Fairhaven Town Hall's lawn with Pride flags. They also plan on holding a Pride rally on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. at Fairhaven Town Hall.

"In some cases you have to do something extreme to get extreme results," Perperas said.

Multiple messages were left for Fairhaven's interim town administrator, Wendy Graves; however there was no response from town hall.
