Electric bicycles have been zooming around for decades and if you think it's starting to get out of hand, you're not alone.

The pedal-assist bikes are great for long rides and can certainly reduce some aches and pains for many. Heck, they'll even make your daily commute a lot easier (and less sweaty).
E-Bike Riding Becomes Reckless
However, it seems as though young riders are getting reckless when it comes to enjoying local roads and rail trails.

As a mom of two young kids who love the bike path, I've had to pull them from harm's way as groups of young kids zoom past at crazy speeds on electric bikes. Donning dirt bike helmets and riding side by side rather than single-file when sharing the path with others can be concerning.

A Letter From the Fairhaven Police Department
On Wednesday, May 14, the Fairhaven Police Department said "enough is enough," posting this letter to its Facebook page:
Dear Parents, With the warmer weather here and more and more kids out and on bicycles I fell this needs to be said... ALOT OF THESE E-BIKES ARE JUST PLAIN DANGEROUS!!!! The way some of your kids are flying around on these things with no regard for anyone else is, and I hope I'm wrong, going to end in tragedy either for them or someone they hit. If your child owns one, you need to monitor them. They go way to fast and a child's body going that fast does not fair well when colliding with another object or the street. Don't get me wrong, I am happy kids are outside but I would love to go back to the days where kids pedaled around, got exercise, and stayed safe. To the Public, with E-Bikes being relatively new the legislation has not caught up with them yet. We will be monitoring any E-Bike riding and if being operated irresponsibly they will be stopped and the bike seized as we can lawfully do so with all bicycles. The last thing I want is to pull up to the scene of another youth fatality!!!
