SouthCoast Mourns the Loss of Fairhaven’s Beloved Owen Costa
The SouthCoast and Fairhaven community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 20-year-old Owen Costa, who passed away on Monday, June 16 after a courageous battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Owen was known for his strength, spirit and larger-than-life heart.
The Fairhaven Police Department, where his mother Jaunna Fresina has long served as Administrative Assistant, shared the tragic news publicly, expressing its deep sorrow.
“It is with extreme sadness I announce the passing of a member of the Fairhaven Police Department family," the department wrote in a heartfelt tribute. "Owen Costa…has succumbed to his long battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Many of us here have known Owen since he was a baby and have seen how tough and resilient he has been through this long and painful battle. We will all miss you, Owen.”
Owen was a student at Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech and a proud member of the Class of 2023. He loved his video games, SpongeBob SquarePants, Post Malone, Taylor Swift, and had a passion for reading and history. Despite the challenges of his illness, Owen was often seen with a smile and a spark that touched those around him.

Back in April, Owen’s name made headlines when his family made a generous donation to the Mass General Pediatric ICU in his honor, showing just how much he and his loved ones have always thought of others, even through the hardest times. The contribution was made possible through Owen’s Buddies, a community-driven initiative that has supported Owen’s journey and helped raise awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Just days before his passing, Owen experienced something he’d always dreamed of: attending his very first concert. He was nervous to go, but faced his fear and had the time of his life seeing Post Malone live. When he got home, he said it was the “funnest thing” he had ever done.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his parents, sister Sarah, grandparents, and a large extended circle of relatives, friends and caregivers who will carry his memory forever.
For anyone who like to pay their respects, calling hours will be held at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals in Mattapoisett on Saturday, June 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Owen's courage, humor, and heart made an unforgettable impact on Fairhaven and beyond. May he rest in peace.
