Fairhaven K-9 Puppy Named
FAIRHAVEN — Fairhaven's new police K-9 dog now has a name.
After polling residents to choose between the top two names 'Blue,' after the Fairhaven High School's Blue Devils mascot, or 'Phoenix', after the town's famous Revolutionary War-era Fort Phoenix, voters have spoken.
Fairhaven Police announced Friday night that the pup will be called 'Blue' after the name won the majority by just 13 votes.
The top two names were selected out of thousands of suggestions from residents over the past week.
The department announced its plans to start a K-9 division in August and revealed the puppy chosen for the job last week.
Today Blue is starting his first day of K-9 Academy at the Bristol County Sheriff's Office with partner Officer Jill Jodoin.
The black Labrador Retriever will help find missing people, track suspects, and detect drugs like heroin and fentanyl.
He will also offer comfort to both officers and citizens after traumatic incidents.
