FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — Big Lots is about to get a little smaller, but the Fairhaven store remains open.

The discount retail chain is expected to close 35 to 40 of its stores this year, although it will also open three new stores. The chain had previously closed 50 stores in 2023.

The announcement of the next round of store closings was made in a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing, and has been picked up by news outlets across the country.

However, one Boston news outlet’s somewhat confusing report has concerned customers wondering if the Fairhaven store is on the chopping block.

Big Lots, founded in 1967, has more than 1,400 stores across the United States, with 23 in Massachusetts – including locations on the SouthCoast or nearby including the Fairhaven store, as well as Swansea, Seekonk, Raynham and Plymouth.

Boston 25’s report on the corporate closures specifically stated that Big Lots has not announced which stores will close – and then went on to list all 23 Massachusetts stores.

That has led some to believe that the Fairhaven store and every other Bay State store on the list is set to close.

We spoke to an employee at the Fairhaven store who said people confused by the Boston 25 report were calling to find out if the store had closed already or wondering when the store is going to close.

The employee reiterated that Big Lots corporate has not said what stores will close, and has not told store staff about any impending closures.

It’s business as usual at the Fairhaven Big Lots, at least for now.
