Fairhaven's Causeway Bridge needs a repair.

The problem was reported to Fairhaven's Board of Public Works this week after a resident spotted a hole in the bridge's sidewalk.

"The highway superintendent was dispatched to check out the scene and determined that there were enough voids in the walkway to temporarily detour folks for safety reasons," BPW Superintendent Vinnie Furtado said.

The good news is that there is no issue with the actual roadway part of the bridge which supports vehicle traffic.

"The road portion of the bridge is fine," Furtado said.

Everything is insurance- and liability-related these days.  We became aware of something that needs repair, so we have to repair it.  We're warning people accordingly for public safety."

Furtado said the repair process is already in motion.  He has been in contact with the town's conservation department to request approval for the project because of its location. Furtado said he hopes to start repairs before foot traffic in the area ramps up with the better weather.

His goal is to have the repairs finished sometime in the next month.  In the meantime, Furtado said pedestrians can carefully walk around the affected area.

As for the actual Causeway Bridge, Furtado said the structure is solid. According to Furtado, the latest report from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts gave the Causeway Bridge structure a grade of B+.

"I'm eventually going to have to tackle that, but not anytime soon," Furtado said.
