Fairhaven’s New Bike Lane Design Is a Game-Changer
For anyone who’s ever pedaled through Fairhaven, especially along Route 6, you know how tense it can get when cars brush too close for comfort.
As someone who enjoys biking around the SouthCoast, I’ve had my fair share of moments where a mirror zipped by just a little too close. But yesterday, while driving down Alden Road, I noticed something that gave me hope.
The town’s Department of Public Works quietly made a change that could save lives: an added painted buffer line next to the existing bike lane – a visual barrier reminding drivers to keep their distance. It’s simple, effective, and honestly, brilliant.
I'm not sure how long ago the lines were painted, but for the first time in a long time, I felt optimistic.
A Simple Stripe That Sends a Big Message
That extra “do not cross” line might seem minor, but it represents a major step toward protecting cyclists. It physically defines the no-go zone for cars, reinforcing Massachusetts’ four-foot passing law, something many drivers either don’t know about or forget the moment they hit the gas.
Fairhaven’s DPW deserves credit here. This is the kind of forward-thinking change that shows the town is paying attention to all who share the road, not just those behind the wheel.

Let’s Bring This to Route 6 — and Beyond
If you’ve driven or biked Route 6 lately, you know it’s one of the most intimidating stretches in town for cyclists. Adding this same buffered design there could be a game-changer, not only improving safety but also signaling that cyclists belong.

Imagine if every town across the SouthCoast followed Fairhaven’s lead. A few painted lines, some thoughtful design, and suddenly, the road feels like a place for everyone.
So here’s to the DPW for taking the initiative. Let’s hope this new addition helps.
