UPDATED Dartmouth Crash: Mystery as Empty Car Found on Fire

UPDATE: Photos from the crash have been added to the story. Police have also posted an update noting that an officer has tracked down the woman who was driving the car in question at a local motel, and that charges are forthcoming.

DARTMOUTH — Dartmouth police are investigating a car crash that caused the temporary closure of part of State Road after a car was found empty and on fire on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesman Det. Kyle Costa said officers responded to the crash at around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on State Road/Route 6 at the New Bedford Country Club.

They arrived to find an empty Nissan Altima "fully engulfed in flames on the golf course," according to Costa.

The car is registered to someone from Tiverton, Rhode Island, but it is unclear who was driving.

Costa said there were no occupants in the car when police arrived, so a department K-9 unit and a department drone were both deployed to check the area.

No one was found, Costa noted.

Since the car had broken a utility pole before ending up on the golf course, resulting in a number of low-hanging wires, State Road was temporarily closed in both directions between Slocum and Hathaway roads.

As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, only the eastbound lane has reopened to traffic.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
