New Location, Same Mission for Cape Cod’s Cancer Thrift Shop

The oldest thrift store on Cape Cod has relocated to a new spot in Massachusetts, giving shoppers more access to support a good cause.

Initially located in West Barnstable, the Cape Cancer Thrift Shop recently moved to Sandwich on Route 6. The move was in October, and the shop created significant buzz and attracted more customers since then.

Thrift stores are a great way to upcycle previously owned items such as clothing, furniture, shoes or even appliances. Prices are usually discounted compared to retailers, and you often walk away with unique purchases.

Cape Cancer Thrift does just that, but the mission behind the store makes it stand out.

Thrift Shopping to Support Cancer Patients

Ellie Poluzzi, President of the Board of Directors, said that profits from every item sold are donated to the Dana Farber and Cape Wellness Collaborative to support the care of cancer patients.

"The store started from a couple who's daughter had cancer. They wanted to give back and raise money, and it's grown exponentially," Poluzzi said.

"We thought it was a good combination to partner with the physiotherapy side of Cape Wellness along with the research side of Dana Farber," she said. "We've now been in partnership with Cape and Wellness for two years."

A mission like this makes it easier to part with items you know are going to a good cause.

More than just a thrift store, this business has been around for over seven decades. It has become a tight-knit community for those navigating the challenges of personal cancer experiences.

All 26 workers of Cape Cancer Thrift are volunteers, and many are cancer survivors themselves.

Although the business doesn't sell clothing, you can still expect to see home goods, furniture, glassware and jewelry when you visit.

The best part is that you can also give back by donating any items you may have laying around that could be put to much better use with a great cause.

For household items, donations can be dropped off Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To donate larger items like furniture, you can contact the store for more information.
