PROVINCETOWN (WBSM) — A Tall Ship called the Kalmar Nyckel will be passing along the SouthCoast on Wednesday, heading into the Cape Cod Canal as it makes its way to Provincetown at the very tip of Cape Cod.

From there, visitors will be able to climb aboard and set sail at various points during its 11-day stay before it returns home to Delaware.

The Kalmar Nyckel is a replica of the Swedish ship of the same name that brought Swedes to North America in 1638, to establish the colony of New Sweden, in the area that is now Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The Kalmar Nyckel made four round-trip journeys from Sweden to North America, the only colonial ship to do so. However, she was eventually sold to Dutch merchants in 1651 and a year later, during the Anglo-Dutch War, she was sunk in action off the coast of Scotland.

This replica of the ship was launched in Delaware in 1997, and has been named that state’s official Tall Ship.

The Kalmar Nyckel will dock at MacMillan Pier in Provincetown and offer day sail adventures from August 2 through August 12; those interested in taking part can purchase tickets on the Kalmar Nyckel website.

The price is $75 for adults and $40 for kids age 12 and under. Each sailing trip lasts two and a half hours and is limited to 49 passengers.

This will mark the first time in five years the boat has visited P-Town; once an annual event, the Kalmar Nyckel’s visits stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ship is expected to pass by the SouthCoast en route to the Cape Cod Canal on Wednesday, but exact times depend on weather conditions and tides. You can follow along with her track at MarineTraffic.com.
