New Bedford is set to welcome the Portuguese Tall Ship Sagres at 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, and the public is encouraged to join in the festivities. Sagres will spend four days in New Bedford at the Marine Commerce Terminal before departing at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 23.

A Grand Welcome in New Bedford Harbor

According to Explore New Bedford, "New Bedford's authentic Azorean Whaleboats and the schooner Ernestina-Morrissey will escort the tall ship into the harbor."

An arrival ceremony will greet Sagres at the terminal berth, during which the Grupo Folclorico do Clube Madeirense S.S. Sacramento will perform," Explore New Bedford said.

Sagres Public Tour Schedule and Historical Presentations in New Bedford

Afterward, the ship invites the public aboard for tours from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Monday, July 20, tours will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tour hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22.

Antonio Manuel Camilo, Sagres' Lieutenant Commander, will give a presentation on the ship's history at the New Bedford Whaling Museum at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21. Tickets for the event, sponsored by the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society, are available online or at the museum.

A Packed July Lineup of New Bedford Summer Events

July is set to be a bustling month in New Bedford. The festivities kick off with the Independence Day fireworks display on Friday, July 3, at 9 p.m. The show will feature patriotic music synchronized and simulcast live on WBSM, with a special Summer Sound Series concert taking place downtown earlier that evening.

The 54th Annual Cape Verdean Recognition Parade is Saturday, July 5, and the Whaling City Festival returns to Buttonwood Park July 9-12.

50s Night New Bedford in Memory of Joe Jesus is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, in Downtown New Bedford.

Jimmy Buffett's Escape to Margaritaville is the first theatrical presentation at the newly renovated Zeiterion Theater for eight performances from July 17-26.
