Attleboro Boy Makes Big Screen Debut in ‘Beetlejuice’ Sequel
One Attleboro boy went from a quiet town to the world of the supernatural after he landed an opportunity to be part of the new film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
As the anticipated film debuted on September 6, Gavin Maser, 10, was thrilled to watch his performance after working on the set as an extra.
Jesse Maser, Gavin's dad, shared that the film was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially given the film's connection to Hollywood It Girl Jenna Ortega and legendary director Tim Burton.
"It was his first time doing it, and it was a very cool experience seeing the process of getting everybody ready, and seeing the behind the scenes of things going on," Jesse Maser said.
Scenes from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice were filmed in Melrose, Massachusetts. The Maser's experience involved two days as extras shooting a trick-or-treating scene.
In the scene, Jenna's character gets dropped off at a house by her mom, and if you keep an eye out, you'll be able to spot Gavin in the background.
"It was Gavin's first time doing it, and it was a very cool experience seeing the process of getting everybody ready, and seeing behind the scenes of things going on," his dad said.
Extras are also usually told to only engage with actors if the actors initiate conversation. Ortega, however, sparked up a conversation with the 10-year-old, turning it into a memorable moment for him and his family.
"When we went to the movies, he was so excited to see himself on the big screen, and so was everyone else we were with," Maser said.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice isn't the Maser family's first experience with Hollywood. The role was secured through an online casting source, a method they are well familiar with.
Just this past April, while filming for The Walking Dead: Dead City was underway in Taunton, Gavin's brother Mason had the opportunity to do some filming for the hit television series.
In the future, the family hopes to continue finding more minor roles for the boys.
"Gavin definitely wants to continue to be a part of the movie experience," Maser said. "Every time I see something filming, I usually sign them up for it. It's a pretty cool oppurtunity to see how things work."
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice serves as a sequel to the cherished classic that was released in 1988. Directed by Burton, the film stars Michael Keaton, Ortega and Winona Ryder.
Next time you check it out, keep an eye out for Attleboro's local talent on the big screen.
