Many families in Massachusetts go to the beautiful ocean on the weekend to relax and take in the sun and sand. However, along with sunscreen don’t forget to bring various fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants which increase the body’s natural defense against cancer-causing damage.
Sunscreen assists in preventing sunlight from penetrating your skin but it’s the added antioxidants and beta-carotene that conquer the free radicals.
So what foods should you bring to your outdoor adventure? The best fruit on the market is the tomato. According to Outside, eating “1/4 cup of tomato paste for two weeks” or women who “eat a tomato-heavy diet have 33 percent more protection against UV exposure than those who skip the fruit.”
Of course, you should not forget blueberries, raspberries or boysenberries. However, remember “protection does not occur overnight” states Karen Collins, a registered dietitian and nutrition adviser to the American Institute for Cancer Research.
Therefore, to remain safe in the sun, continue to apply sunscreen and eat foods that not only taste good but are rich in antioxidants!
