A small group of Wareham residents are fighting to save their community against drug abuse.  They have formed a group called Wareham Community Outreach to educate town residents about the dangers of drug abuse in general, and opioid abuse in particular.

Courtney Soqui says prescription drug overdoses in the past year have risen 42 percent in Wareham. In response, she and her husband Steve and others have joined forces to reach out to the Wareham community.

They're staging an "open house" every Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 3065 Cranberry Highway, inviting drug users and family members to have some refreshments, get life-saving information and pick up supplies like prevention and harm reduction kits.

Steve Soqui, a Sergeant in the Wareham Police Department, calls the open house "a judgment-free zone," and says if someone comes in and wants help, he or she will get it immediately.

Steve and Courtney Soqui stopped by Townsquare Sunday this week and outlined their plan to save lives in Wareham. Their interview can be heard here:
