Women's Fund SouthCoast is planning a full day of activities on Mother's Day, May 12, at Cisco Brewers on East Rodney French Boulevard in New Bedford.

It starts with the 14th annual Mother's Day 5K Run/Walk, a fundraiser which begins at 9 a.m.

Executive Director Christine Monska stopped by Townsquare Sunday to discuss the event and the work the Women's Fund does in the community.

Monska said the nonprofit Women's Fund has been around for more than two decades, doing research on the status of women and girls on the SouthCoast and funding programs to help empower women.

"Over the past 24 years, we have invested some $1.5 million in organizations that are moving the needle on gender and racial justice," she said. "We also advocate for issues that are important to women and girls."

The 5K, for many years known as the Tiara 5K Mother's Day Run, plays an important role in funding programs for women. Monska said the goal is to raise at least $50,000 with that money going to fund the Women's Fund mission to support their grantee partners and the work they are doing.

Monska expects up to 1,000 runners and walkers on the course around the South End peninsula – and yes, the event is open to men as well. She said entire families are welcome.

"After the race, there will be an awards ceremony, also a DJ with music, and we're hoping that people will stick around with their families and take in the fun, perhaps enjoy lunch at Cisco as well," she said.
