Australian police say a car has crashed into the main gate of the U.S. Embassy in Canberra (KAN'-behr-uh), the capital, and the driver has been arrested.

The incident on Wednesday night sparked a security scare and roads around the embassy were closed. Australian Federal Police Acting Superintendent Darren Rath says a bomb squad inspected the car but found no explosives. The driver was not injured and neither the car nor the gate were seriously damaged.

Police are investigating whether the crash was an accident or deliberate.

The 30-year-old driver was taken into custody and was expected to appear in court on Thursday.
