A Boston-area social studies teacher is being honored as the Massachusetts Teacher of the Year for 2015.

The honor for Jeffrey Shea, who teaches at Belmont High School, was announced Tuesday by the state Department of Education.

Shea has taught at the school since 2009, introducing initiative ways to teach daily lessons including the use of iPads. He also encourages global awareness and civic engagement among his students.

Shea says he holds himself and his students to high standards but also makes sure the lectures are fun and engaging.

Mitchell Chester, state Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner, says Shea's dedication and commitment shows teaching is more than just a job for him.
