WESTPORT (WBSM) — A house fire that broke out in Westport Wednesday afternoon has left the property severely damaged.

Firefighters responded to a home on Drift Road for initial reports of an electrical fire. Although the property owner extinguished the fire, officials said the homeowners still called 911 to report it.

Upon arrival, firefighters found light smoke coming from the eaves and attic vent and determined that there was still active fire in the attic and wall space.

Firefighters were able to contain and extinguish the fire before it spread throughout the rest of the home.

Officials said a room in the home and attic suffered significant fire and water damage. However, a good portion of the house remained intact and personal belongings, including family photos, were spared.

The American Red Cross is assisting the homeowner. The fire is under investigation.
