With the harsh winter forcing a few areas of Fairhaven's budget into the red, the town is looking for creative ways to save money.

The town spent around $100,000 over the snow removal budget this winter between wages, operation costs, and fixing equipment.

Costs on road repair was another concern the board had. Chairman Robert Espindola told WBSM News drivers might not see smooth streets until the summer.

The board said leaks and pipe bursts caused the town's water department to go over budget as well.

Along with the board making a few cuts to the budget, Espindola presented a wellness program at last night's meeting. He says the program would lower health costs by encouraging town employees to exercise, eat better, and even quit smoking.

While all three board members supported the wellness program, only two voted to recommend it. Board member Geoff Haworth said that while the program is a good idea, the town has other priorities to focus on.
