Wareham Police: Man Tried Tossing Gun After Drunk Driving Accident
WAREHAM - Wareham Police say a man who ran from the scene of a car accident tried disposing of a gun before police arrived.
Acting Police Chief John Walcek says Wareham Police were called to 23 Onset Avenue at around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a motor vehicle accident, with witnesses saying one of the drivers had fled on foot into a nearby wooded area and then re-emerged before police arrived.
Police at the scene determined that one of the cars involved had crossed the center line, striking another car. Police also determined the driver of that car, Christopher Ardita, 45, of Bourne, was the man who had earlier run into the woods. Police observed Ardita was under the influence of alcohol. Police arrested Ardita, and then checked the area in the woods that he had run off to, and found a fully loaded handgun registered in his name.
Ardita is being arraigned Thursday in Wareham District Court on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, marked lanes violation, improper storage of a firearm, and carrying a firearm while intoxicated.
