Wareham Man Arrested for OUI, Attempts to Escape Custody
WAREHAM — On Wednesday, August 30 at approximately 12:30 pm, officers of the Wareham Police Department, along with Wareham EMS and Onset Fire Department personnel responded to the area of Sand N’ Surf gift shop on Rte. 6 & 28, regarding a motor vehicle accident involving two vehicles traveling westbound. The initial report included the fact that a Jeep Renegade occupied by three young children and two adults was struck in the rear by a red Hyundai Elantra that left the scene at a high rate of speed after the impact.
While responding to the scene of the accident, Wareham EMS personnel noticed the red Hyundai with extensive front end damage operated by a male, later identified as 25-year-old Wareham resident Zachary Perocchi, pull into the Lakeside Trailer Park off Rte. 6 & 28, which is located approximately one mile from where the accident occurred.
Upon arrival at Lakeside Trailer Park, officers immediately noticed Perocchi--a Lakeside Trailer Park resident--appeared extremely intoxicated, as he smelled of alcohol and slurred his words as he spoke. After failing sobriety tests, Perocchi was placed under arrest and transported to Wareham Police headquarters, where he attempted to escape from custody in the station booking area, but was quickly apprehended.
Although both vehicles sustained extensive damage, there were no reported injuries as a result of the incident.
Perocchi was arrested and charged with OUI liquor, leaving the scene after causing property damage, operating to endanger, operating after license suspension and escape from a municipal lockup facility.
