Former NFL Most Valuable Player Adrian Peterson is facing accusations of child abuse.

The attorney for the Minnesota Vikings running back has confirmed his client was indicted in his native Texas for reckless or negligent injury to a child. He issued a statement saying the charged conduct involves Peterson using a switch to spank his son. He added that Peterson voluntarily testified before a grand jury for several hours and is fully cooperating with authorities investigating the matter.

According to reports, the incident took place in May when Peterson's son visited him in Texas. Upon returning to his mother in Minnesota, she noticed the injuries and took him to a doctor, who alerted authorities.

The Vikings have deactivated Peterson for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots. (Metro Networks Inc.)
