When Politicians Try Too Hard: The Epic Sports Fails of Massachusetts Leaders
Do you know why Democrat John Kerry – decorated Vietnam War vet, Massachusetts Lt. Governor, U.S. Senator, President Barack Obama's Secretary of State, and President Joe Biden's climate czar – lost the presidency to Republican incumbent George W. Bush in 2004?
And it wasn't the bubble boy gaffe, either.
Kerry flubbed and fumbled local sports info that he should have aced.

The 2004 Campaign Slip That Started It All
During the campaign, Kerry congratulated baseball stadiums across the country for playing the Boston Red Sox anthem, "Sweet Caroline." In doing so, he called the song "Sweet Adeline." Even Yankee fans are smarter than that. Kerry even mislabeled his supposed favorite player, "Big Papi," as "Manny Ortiz" instead of David.

Kerry also referred to historic Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, as "Lambert Field." Oy vey!
A Long Tradition of Boston Sports Blunders
Politicians try to show that they are one of us by tossing out sports references, and when they get it wrong, it's usually a doozy.
The Marquette University Faculty blog posted that another Massachusetts U.S. Senator, Edward M. Kennedy, introduced baseball legends Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa as "Mike McGwire and Sammy Sooser" during their 1998 home run race.

From "Gonk" to "Wilcock": Tom Menino's Masterclass in Mumbles
Former Boston Mayor Tom Menino wasn't called "Mumbles" for nothing. Menino made an art form of slaughtering New England Patriots names with gems like "Gonk," "Vince Wilcock," and "Wes Weckler," to name a few.
Marquette says, "Massachusetts Attorney General (former) and unsuccessful U.S. Senate candidate Martha Coakley's error in labeling Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling a Yankee fan was reminiscent of the late Senator Ted Kennedy's tenuous command of the world of baseball."
2026 Massachusetts Governor's Race Features True Sports Fans
Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue is a die-hard Patriots and Red Sox fan. Incumbent Democrat Maura Healey has played professional basketball and bent over backwards to promote the World Cup matches in Massachusetts. Both are at least legit sports fans.
