Trooper Charged In Fatal Crash

A Massachusetts State Trooper is facing drunken-driving and negligent-operation charges in connection with a crash that killed a mother and daughter in Plymouth last weekend.

    Police say Trooper John Basler was issued citations Friday over the crash that killed 64-year-old Susan Macchi and 23-year-old Juliet Macchi last Sunday. Susan Macchi, of Carver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Juliet Macchi died at a hospital.

    Basler, of Kingston, was off-duty at the time of the crash.

    Police say Basler will also be charged with carrying a firearm while under the influence.

    A message left for Basler's attorney was not immediately returned Saturday night. A state police spokesman wasn't immediately available.

    Plymouth police Chief Michael Botieri says the crash is still under investigation and more charges may be filed.  (Associated Press)
