Federal and state authorities are investigating whether three bald eagles found ill at an eastern Massachusetts pond fed off a farm animal that had been euthanized with a drug.

The Standard-Times of New Bedford reports that the eagles were found Wednesday on the shores of Assawompset Pond in Lakeville and taken away for care.

Officials with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs say the eagles may have been sickened by the contaminated meat of a farm animal that had been euthanized.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state environmental police are investigating.

Authorities didn't release any other information.
