TAUNTON (WBSM) —- A man was arrested in Taunton earlier today after he allegedly shot at police officers while barricaded inside the bathroom of an apartment.

Taunton Police Chief Edward J. Walsh said officers responded at about 9 a.m. today to an address on Hodges Avenue for a well-being check. They arrived to find that the suspect had barricaded himself into the bathroom of the apartment.

Walsh said upon officers entering the apartment, the suspect fired at the officers and at least one officer returned fire.

According to Walsh, no one was struck in the exchange of gunfire.

Backup units arrived and the home and the surrounding area were evacuated. Walsh said officers on the scene were able to establish communication with the suspect and after about an hour, they were able to convince him to surrender peacefully.

He was arrested and transported to the police station for booking. His name was not released.

“Police believe that this was an isolated incident and not a random act of violence,” Walsh said. “There is no ongoing threat to the community's safety.”
