SouthCoast Restaurants Compete in First-Ever Smash Burger Showdown

Smash burger fans, get ready, because something juicy is coming to New Bedford.

What started as a crazy idea at three in the morning while on paternity leave blossomed into a beautiful and friendly food competition between local hot spots to help bring the community together. I teamed up with Amy Melody of Events by Amy Melody to create a fun and free event to promote small business on a much bigger level.

This Saturday, June 21 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Surfside Creamery (26 Brock Ave) will host the first-ever SouthCoast Smash Bash, a high-stakes burger battle featuring eight local restaurants squaring off in a blind taste test to claim bragging rights as the region’s Best Classic Smash Burger and Best Signature Smash Burger.

Each competitor will be slinging two versions of their best burgers: one traditional and one with flair, for a panel of local celebrity judges and a cheering crowd of burger lovers. The best part? It’s completely free to attend.

The Judges

So who’s judging this epic meat showdown? Let’s meet the panel:

• Teddy Goodz – Pro wrestler and co-owner of Cojo’s Toy World
• Kait Walsh – Morning news anchor at WPRI Channel 12
• Amanda Mello – One half of the foodie duo "Little Ladies Big Appetites"
• Brian Martins and Derrick DeMelo – Comedians and local legends behind The Portuguese Kids

The Restaurants/Schedule

Expect the grills to be hot, the flavors bold and the competition fierce.

With a live DJ (yours truly), good vibes and some of the best smash burgers the SouthCoast has to offer, this is shaping up to be the burger bash of the summer.
