The Massachusetts Democratic Party has responded to Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue's debate challenge to Governor Maura Healey.

Mike Minogue Calls for Early Debates

Minogue, who collected the lion's share of delegate votes at the recent Massachusetts Republican Party's nominating convention in Worcester, quickly issued a challenge to the incumbent to debate.

In a post on X, Minogue said, "I'm calling on Maura Healey to join me for two debates before Labor Day."

"Voters deserve to see us side-by-side, answering questions and laying out a clear vision for Massachusetts," he wrote.

Republican Primary Still Stands in the Way

Minogue has one problem: he has a primary election opponent to get through first in September before he can get to Healey.

While it's true that Minogue collected over 70 percent of the delegate vote in Worcester, Brian Shortsleeve received 15.5 percent, enough to qualify him for the primary ballot – and Shortsleeve shows no sign of giving up.

Massachusetts Democrats Respond on X

That's a point not lost on the Democratic Party, which issued a response on X to Minogue's debate challenge. "News flash to Mike Minogue: he has a primary opponent, and he should stop ducking his own party's debates," the party wrote. Ouch!

Pressure Builds Inside the GOP Race

Boston.com noted, "In the wake of the convention, allies of Minogue began a pressure campaign with the hopes of forcing Shortsleeve out of the race."

"During a recent appearance on WCVB, Minogue responded to questions about debating Shortsleeve, saying that he has done plenty of side-by-side appearances with opponents over the past few months," wrote Boston.com.

The Massachusetts Republican Party primary is September 1, 2026.

I'll be watching to see if voters view Minogue's challenge as arrogance or just a good campaign strategy.
