Seekonk Public Schools to Open Newly Renovated Sports Complex Sept. 1
SEEKONK — As kids get ready to head back to school in Seekonk, they might find some improvements when they get there: the high school's athletic complex has just gotten renovated, and officials are cutting the ribbon on Sept. 1.
District officials announced in a release Tuesday that Connelly Field and Mooney Track have been upgraded just in time for the new school year, with a new synthetic turf field, press box, sound system, and larger storage shed, among other improvements.
The town approved the renovations in November 2019.
Seekonk Schools Superintendent Rich Drolet and Connelly Field Turf & Mooney Track Renovation Building Committee Chairperson Stephen Prew said the previous field was over 20 years old and "in poor condition."
The new turf field, on the other hand, has modern performance technology, like a shock pad underneath to help prevent sports impact injuries, and organic infill that reduces heat by up to 33 degrees, officials noted.
Along with the new turf, the complex features a new 400-meter running track that includes eight lanes on the home straightaway and six on the visitor's side — all painted in the district's color.
It also boasts a new press box and sound system designed for better acoustics and less impact on neighbors, according to the release — as well as a storage building that will better accommodate track and field equipment.
Other renovations include to upgrade the drainage system, walkways, fences, and gates to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
"We are delighted to unveil the newly renovated Seekonk Connelly Field and Mooney Track the first day our students return to school this year," said Drolet, who went on to call it "an incredible sports complex."
"On behalf of the committee, we are very excited to see the project come to a conclusion and we are grateful to the community for their support," Prew commented.
"We now have a first-class track and field that our students and community can be proud of for years to come."
Seekonk officials will unveil the renovated Connelly Field and Mooney Track at a ribbon cutting on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. at the complex, which is located at 261 Arcade Ave.
