The Boston Red Sox are placing third baseman Pablo Sandoval on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder.

The injury has left "The Panda" with limited defensive range. Sandoval is 0-for-6 with a walk in three games this season.

The 29-year-old slugger lost his starting role in spring training to Travis Shaw. Manager John Farrell says this will give Sandoval some time away from all the scrutiny.

Sandoval signed a five-year, 95-million-dollar contract with Boston last offseason, but hit just .245 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI in his first season with the Red Sox. He won three World Series with the Giants. (Metro Networks Inc.)
