Dumping cable TV for a streaming service could mean you have to pay to watch the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins.

I stopped watching Major League Baseball when the players and management got into politics. I used to enjoy watching Red Sox games in the evening while reading or working at home.

Why Fans Are Walking Away From Sports

But I don't care which ball players like which president or who doesn't want to go to the White House after winning a championship. That is true for all sports and all presidents, regardless of party affiliation.

The NBA and NFL are just as bad. Thank God the NHL sticks to the business of smacking the hell out of each other and doesn't get involved in politics.

I still watch football, college and pro, but that's it.

With the new baseball season underway, I considered giving the sport another shot. That is, until I learned it would cost me to watch the Red Sox play.

Since giving up baseball, I also gave up cable TV in favor of YouTube TV. I cut the cord, as they say.

What NESN 360 Costs Boston Fans

NESN, which carries both teams, charges $29.99 per month or approximately $239.99 per year for the NESN 360 app. The app provides in-market access to Red Sox and Bruins games on mobile, desktop, and smart TVs.

Cable vs Streaming: Are You Really Saving?

Your monthly cable TV subscription likely includes NESN, which means you do not have to pay the app fees. The cost is included in your high monthly cable bill, the main reason many cut the cord in the first place, so you're not really avoiding paying to watch sports.

A new Fox poll finds "the majorities of both sports fans (72 percent) and non-fans (60 percent) think major sporting events should be required to stay on free broadcast television, not behind streaming paywalls."

"Nearly 6 in 10 sports fans say they've skipped watching a game at least a few times in the past year because it was too expensive, including about one-third who say this has happened 'many times,'" according to Fox.
