Brian Rudolph is shedding more light about the decision not to renew his contract as head basketball coach at New Bedford High School after one successful season.

The Standard-Times reported on Saturday that Rudolph's contract was not renewed by school officials. He remains a health teacher in the district. A School Department spokesman declined to discuss the decision, saying the district does not discuss personnel matters.

But on his Facebook page on Saturday, Rudolph said he will not be coaching this year because of a misunderstanding of an MIAA rule. He said it was an "absolute shame than an honest mistake from a first-time offender resulted in a one-year suspension."

Rudolph led the Whalers to a 16-6 record last season, and a spot in the Division One South Quarter-Finals. But he said his favorite memory of last year wasn't on the basketball court. Rudolph said it was seeing all nine seniors on the team graduate from high school. Eight are now in college. He called that "more gratifying than any win."

Rudolph is a former star player for the Whalers.  He started as a volunteer assistant coach for New Bedford High School in 2012.  He also coached the junior varsity before becoming varsity coach in 2017.
