People from across the Southcoast are mourning the loss of musician Armsted Christian, who died on Monday at the age of 64 after a lengthy illness.

The Berklee College professor performed received a Grammy nomination for "All the Man You Need" with Will Downing.

City Councillor-At-Large Brian Gomes spoke with WBSM's Phil Paleologos on Tuesday and said that Christian had an immeasurable impact on the New Bedford's Cultural Scene.

"He will be really missed, his sweet sound of music that he could put together even during the holidays and any other time with John Harrison, Jackie Santos and many many others," said Gomes "we don't even realize what we have sometimes in this city and he's been doing it for a long time."

Gomes says that even though he performed with greats such as Diana Ross and Regina Carter, his most profound impact was the one he had with the area's young people.

"Whether it was on an MLK celebration at one of the local churches every year, or just in general with music he was just a beacon for all and just could bring a good feeling to you when you've seen him," said Gomes.

Christian is survived by his wife Marci Pina-Christian and his children: Aria, Maya, Aaron,Cecily,  and Kyle and a granddaughter, Iloni Taylor.

No funeral arrangements have been announced at this time.
