In an effort to clear space on the 40-man roster for the addition of the newly signed J. D. Martinez, the Boston Red Sox shipped outfielder Bryce Brentz to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.

The Sox will get cash considerations in return for the career minor leaguer, who has seen his path to the majors blocked in Boston.

The former first-round pick has played in just 34 Major League games and 716 Minor League games.

Brentz hit a career-high 31 homers last season at Triple-A Pawtucket, while also driving in 85 runs and batting .271.
