If you like Portuguese sweet bread, what a time to be alive.

Fall River's got a chance for you to sample a bunch of it, but before we get to that, let me share my hot take.

Eggs do not belong baked into the top of Portuguese sweet bread. Now, let me be clear. I don't have a drop of Portuguese blood in me, which pretty much renders my opinion worthless. However, I'm not the only one who feels like this.

I get that for some, it's tradition, and a beautiful tradition at that. It's said that the hard-baked egg in the bread symbolizes the resurrection of Christ. Separate from that, having an egg baked into the bread is just so visually unappealing.

Again, I get that I might not understand because I'm not Portuguese. I wasn't even exposed to linguica until I was in my early 20s.

Your Opinion of Eggs in Sweet Bread Matters

Viva Fall River has organized a contest to show off some of the world's best Portuguese bakeries, located right here on the SouthCoast. The organization is looking to the general public for volunteer judges. The best part is that it costs nothing to be a judge and you get to eat as much Portuguese sweet bread as you can.

So, what say you about whether or not there should be an egg baked into the top of this tasty bread? Now's your chance to flex your opinion by being a judge.

Viva Fall River is hosting a free sweet bread tasting event on Friday, February 23, 5 to 8 p.m., at Viva Maker Shop, 333 South Main St., in downtown Fall River. Roughly 20 local bakeries will compete and if you love sweet bread, you are invited to be one of the judges.

Simply show up and taste the samples.

Why Is Fall River Having This Sweet Bread Competition?

The competition goal is to spread awareness and highlight all the great bakeries, cafes and markets in the region. A map of participating bakeries is available here.

Sweet bread lovers are invited to visit as many of the 20 bakeries as they can during February, and to vote up to once per day for their favorite

Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. on February 29.
