Plymouth Firefighters Rescue Three From Stranded Sailboat

PLYMOUTH (WBSM) — Three people were safely rescued in Plymouth this morning after their boat ran aground.

According to a release from Plymouth Fire Chief Neil Foley, a 911 call came in at around 7:30 a.m. today for a report of a sailboat in distress and in danger of running aground in the area of 92 Center Hill Road.

Firefighters arrived to find that neighbors in the area, including retired Plymouth Fire Battalion Chief Michael Roy, had put on wetsuits and entered the water in an attempt to assist the stranded sailors, Foley said.

The sailboat did run aground and was lodged about 75 to 100 feet from the shore, according to Foley. Firefighters entered the water and made their way toward the sailboat.

Firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Plymouth Harbormaster, the U.S. Coast Guard and Plymouth Police.

They found the crew – two men and a woman – still on board. The three people were uninjured. They were assisted off the sailboat and onto land, and then taken to the hospital to be evaluated for possible effects of exposure.

Foley said it is believed the 40-foot sailboat had departed Boston yesterday and was headed to Florida.
