NEW BEDFORD - One person has been injured following a collision involving two boats outside of New Bedford Harbor.

The collision took place just before 10 a.m. Wednesday near the Butler Flats Lighthouse off the coast of the city's South End.

New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the collision involved a recreational boat and the 75 foot fishing vessel Reflection.

The sole occupant of the recreational boat sustained a head injury. Chief Gomes tells says Fire Department officials provided aid to the injured man at the scene. "We also brought a team of EMS out there with us, so he received treatment at the scene of the collision," said Gomes. "The injured person was transported to Pier 3 where he was transported to St. Luke's Hospital."

The man's injury is not considered life-threatening.

Chief Gomes says heavy fog likely played a role in the crash. "I believe reduced visibility [was the cause]. I was told that visibility was less than an eighth of a mile, so I think that was a contributing factor to the collision."

Police and Fire officials from New Bedford and Fairhaven, the New Bedford Harbormaster, U.S. Coast Guard, and Massachusetts Environmental Police responded to the scene.

The collision is under investigation by the Coast Guard and MEP.
