Two Dogs Perish in New Bedford South End Fire
Two dogs were killed in a house fire Saturday night in New Bedford’s South End.
According to a New Bedford Fire Department Facebook post, firefighters responded to 58 Willard Street shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, for a report of a structure fire.
Engine 6 and Ladder 3 arrived to find the two-story, single-family home with fire coming up out of the roof in the rear of the home. Crews were able to contain the fire to just the home and keep it from spreading to other nearby structures, the department said, and a special alarm was called to bring four engines, two ladders and the air supply unit to the scene.
The residence was home to three adults, who were not home at the time of the fire; however, the fire department said a female resident had to be transported to St. Luke’s shortly after arriving on scene. The Red Cross is assisting the residents in relocation efforts.
Fire officials said two out of the four dogs that lived in the home perished in the fire, and two cats were missing at the time of the post.
No firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
