There are other cuts that can be made without putting teachers on the chopping block first. That's the word from New Bedford Educators Association President Lou St. John as the school committee weighs laying off 250 people, at least 100 of them teachers.

Appearing on WBSM's "Mid-Day Live", St. John says incoming Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin's $185,000 salary has some meat on it.

St. John says he would like to see the school committee consider the tabling of the Renniasance School for the Arts until the addition of the innovation school makes fiscal sense.

The school committee is holding two more budget workshops, Wednesday and Thursday at 6pm at Keith Middle School.
